Outdated Design Features That Need To Go!!
There are some outdated design features that could cause huge problems in your home should you decide to sell or rent it. You may love a particular style, but the majority of buyers & renters might not. You want to grab the attention of the buyer/renter in a positive way. Remember a WOW factor!
Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the home! If you don’t have the funds to put all new cabinetry and granite counters then sometimes making a few minor changes can make all the difference. Change the paint color to a warm, neutral tone. Get rid of any clutter (this should be done in all rooms). Update your appliances (sometimes you can even hire someone to paint them), paint your cabinets, change the pulls, or get a high-end looking counter for a fraction of the cost. They have some nice affordable Formica & Solid surface material now available. You might even save a bundle by doing much of the work yourself.
Walls
Have your walls painted a warm neutral color is a must! I have been told so many times that I just can’t picture myself in that house with the walls so dark. You might like the brown tones but your buyer/renter might not. It’s imperative to have neutral tones throughout the house. If you have wood paneling remove it!
Popcorn ceiling
Popcorn ceilings must go! They’re bumpy, attract dust, look unattractive, and can actually decrease your home’s value. The only way to take it down is by scraping it and then repaint it. However, some of these ceilings used years ago included asbestos, so you’re better off just hiring a painter to do it for you to save yourself the time, energy, and hassle.
Bathroom
If you have a pink/black/green toilet and sink with matching tiles on the walls, it’s going to be tough for you to find a buyer/renter if they are not in love with those colors. Most people are not in a position to redo a bath. A white toilet, sink, and tile means that the buyer/renter can accessorize and change it up to their own style. You can also try to change the color of cabinetry & install new counters.
Flooring
Tiling & real wood flooring work best in Bermuda.
Lighting
Any fluorescent lighting? Get rid of it! Go with something softer and more décor friendly throughout your home!
Final Thought
The good thing about ugly/outdated design features is that they can easily be changed and should be done before the property is put on the market. Most changes are not expensive to do. They may require a bit of time to fix. In the end, it will benefit you and your home as well as its value. Remember you always want a WOW factor! I do hope this article was of some help and I do have someone on my staff that would be happy to assist you should the need arise! Have a Bermudaful day! Kim Sheen
